- The U.S. finally launched its first satellite, Explorer 1.
- Nikita Khrushchev became the Premier of the Soviet Union.
- Brazil won the World Cup.
- Subscriber Trunk Dialling was introduced in Britain.
It is also the year that Rostrum Club 23 was inaugurated.
Club 23 invite all Rostrum members and their partners to their 50 year celebration.
